Our Story

Helping Hands is a platform designed to connect young teens with opportunities to make a meaningful impact in assisted living centers. Our mission is to inspire the next generation to care for and support elderly residents through companionship, activities, and volunteer work. By fostering connections between teens and seniors, we aim to bridge generational gaps and create a more compassionate, understanding community for all.

About Me!

Hi, I’m Akil Sehgal, a high school senior with a long-term goal of becoming a cardiologist! This past summer, while interning at River Oaks Assisted Living in Coppell, Texas, I was struck by how one person was managing the immense responsibility of caring for many elderly residents. Inspired by their dedication, I began volunteering and eventually became an intern, helping residents with motor skills, and cognitive games, and offering companionship. Through this experience, I realized how much of a difference a little extra support can make. That’s why I created Helping Hands—to encourage other young people to get involved, offer their time, and form meaningful connections with elderly residents in assisted living centers. As I continue on my path to becoming a doctor, I know the lessons I’ve learned from this experience will continue to shape my future.

My Misson

Using Helping Hands, my mission is to create a bridge between generations by empowering young people to support the elderly in assisted living centers. I believe that everyone deserves care, attention, and meaningful connections and that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact.

Through this platform, I want to inspire teens to step up, get involved, and make a difference. Whether it’s helping with daily tasks, playing games to enhance cognitive and motor skills, or simply offering companionship, our goal is to improve the quality of life for elderly residents while also helping young people grow into compassionate, empathetic individuals.

Having personally experienced the difference volunteering can make during my internship at River Oaks Assisted Living, I created Helping Hands to share this opportunity with others. My vision is to build a community where young volunteers are actively contributing to the well-being of elderly residents, while learning valuable life lessons along the way.

Our mission is to show that no matter your age, you can play a role in brightening someone’s day and making a lasting impact on their life.
